Emperor Cronos V treats us poorly! We are slaves, slaves to build the empire, he is a cruel tyrant who has made his own people de facto slaves! He must be deposed so we can be free again! Liberation is coming, soon!
— Kataka Rasugai, leader of the Cronosian Rebels, to the Doctor

The Cronos War was a rebellion which happened in the second half of the 28th Century, it started because the lower-class Cronosians who had been enslaved by their government took up arms against tyrannical Emperor Cronos V.

Prelude[]

Before Cronos V we lived in freedom, his father, Cronos IV, was a good ruler, he strengthened the empire, but then his son took power when he died, his son is a tyrant!
— Kataka Rasugai to The Doctor

The Cronosian Empire was a small empire found in the Cronos System, about 200 years before the war (around 2,572 AD), the planet of Cronos colonised nearby planets, as more Cronosian colonists began to colonise the newly-colonised planets they set up local governments, but these local governments were ruled by Cronos, this was the start of the Cronosian Empire.

Cronos IV was considered one of the best rulers of the Cronosian Empire, he was kind to his people and he strengthened the empire. In 2,771 AD he died and was succeeded by his son Cronos V, unlike his father Cronos V was an expansionist and wanted to Cronosian Empire to grow into a big empire. He wished to expand his empire outwards and then form an alliance with the Earth Empire, the empire of his distant Earth Human "cousins" (Cronosians were humans who were descended from early human explorers who had found Cronos and settled on it).

In order to achieve his goal he decided he needed to enlarge the Cronosian Imperial Navy, whilst he had little doubt that his people would work out of patriotic duty, he believed that enslaving his people would make them work more efficiently, since they would not be allowed as many breaks as other workers.

I only enslaved my people to make them work more efficiently! Slaves work hard! They are not allowed as many breaks, so they can get more done than free workers! When I consider the Imperial Navy large enough for my goals I will release them, and they can look in pride at the glorious Cronosian Imperial Navy they have created!
— Emperor Cronos V to The Doctor
